Website Spiderability

July 24th, 2010

A website can not get a good ranking in search engines unless it has been crawled and indexed by the search engines in a proper way. A proper way means that search engine crawler is able to get to all the website pages. In other words, website spiderability can be termed as a good and effective navigation structure of the website.

There are two important factors that should be considered for a better website spiderability or indexing:

1. Navigation has true hyperlinks
2. Deep link distance from home page

Navigation Links

All the websites have a navigation structure that let users to browse through the website. The question is, if the navigation is effective and linked properly and are these links a standard hyperlink? The standard hyperlinks are the text or image links with all SEO ingredients, ALT text, link title tag etc.

The non standard or poor navigation links are those which are embedded within flash or javascript generated links. Although, there is nothing wrong about such links but not all search engine crawlers can pick the hyperlinks generated by javascript or links within flash.

The search engine crawlers that can pick these links are very few. Google is one of them but it is not clear if Google gives any value to such links. The point here is, Google Page Rank factor is mostly based over the links that are pointing to a page and not a single link can be ignored.

The navigation structure should be carefully created as all the pages within a website should be linked to each other. It doesn’t mean that every page should point to all pages of the website but it is recommended that every page should point to those pages that are most important.

Deep Link Distance

Home page of a website is the first page a user will visit. Not only a user but also the search engine spiders will crawl it first and pick the links that are placed on the home page.

Ideally; a user will click not more than twice to check your services or products. The more clicks it takes to reach a page less is the chance of exposure. Similarly, there is a less chance of indexing of deep links by a search engine crawler if they are too distant from home page.

Use of Site-Map

Crowding the home page with a lot of links is not recommended and to avoid this, site-maps are used. Site maps have become an important part of a website. Placing them on just on click distance from home page allow search engine crawlers to pick a site map and as a site map contains all links of a website, the crawler can get the complete website indexed with ease.

Although, using site map to get your website crawled can be a good idea but the most effective way is to properly structure the website navigation.

July 21st, 2010

Millions of people online struggle every single day trying to master the art of creating content and having it reach the first page of Google. This is what every webmaster would like to see happen, but the majority will never see any real results from their work. The problem with most people who attempt to optimize their web presence for search engines is they think SEO is tricky missing the most basic parts of how to reach the top of major search engines. Once you get the basics of SEO down you will be able to reach the top of all the major search engines for any term you would like to do well for. The most important aspect for any webmaster is creating content worth being on the first page. I know many will tell you that backlinks or keywords are the key to search engine results, but if your content is crap then you can forget about getting the first page.

I found good content really helps with the creation of my website get paid to read email. If you think about what your niche is needing then develop a Url which really explains your website and is usually a wanted key term success will come naturally. Of course it is a good idea to really work hard researching your topic when creating the content. One focus should always be on the front burner when creating a new web presence and that is to create your presence for the user rather than search engines. You must realize that search engines spend millions developing technologies that find the best website for their users. If your web presence has been built for your visitors search engines will see that and will rank your website nicely.

Even though the most important aspect of SEO is developing your presence for visitors rather than search engines there are still a few things you can do to give your website a boost. First it is good to know what search engines look at when ranking your website. The most important thing in their eyes is trying to figure out what your content is about. You can help search engines by creating good titles that explain your content nicely. If your content is about how to make money online free then title your page how to make money online free. If you want to rank well for a certain term then make sure your website fits that term and then place the term in your title and within your content. The second issue when trying to rank well is backlinks. Search engines scan the entire web looking at the links from one site to another. If your URL is on many different websites across the web it will be seen as a vote of confidence from their websites. Those links tell others that hey this guy is ok Google you can trust him. Using Google To Improve SEO

July 20th, 2010

For most people, the term “search engine” has become synonymous with the name “Google.” But what many don’t realize is that, aside from the generic search engine capabilities, Google also offers plenty of free tools to help improve your SEO and get the most out of your site. The following guide offers helpful advice on pairing services like Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools to tweak your site and kick up your search engine ranking a few notches.

How to Use Google to Improve Your SEO: General Google SEO Tips

Since Google is still a search engine at heart, you’ll need to implement a few SEO tactics in order to take full advantage of the tools Google offers to help optimize your site. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Don’t neglect the power of “off-site” links. Google places a lot of emphasis on links, says Chris Dawkins, CEO of Trace Media Marketing, a New York City-based SEO and Internet marketing firm. In other words, the more links that point back to your website, the higher Google will rank your site.

2. Reach out to sites with similar keywords. Ideally, says Dawkins, you want to obtain links from high quality websites that are related to your target keywords. If you want to reach a high search engine ranking for “Chicago tutors,” for example, your best links would come from other sites that also rank well for that search term. Reaching out to these sites through social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook has become a popular and highly effective method of obtaining external links.

3. Maintain your “on-site” optimization. This involves the more commonly known aspects of SEO, says Dawkins, such as creating accurate, but descriptive, meta tags and regularly posting keyword-rich content to your site. Naturally, if your site is about cars, for example, the more well placed, automotive-related terms you use within your content, the better SEO ranking you’ll likely get as Google crawls your site.

How to Use Google to Improve Your SEO: Utilizing the Google Webmaster Tools

Google’s Webmaster Tools help you to identify and fix problems within your site, such as broken links, which enables you to boost your SEO by making it easier for search engines to crawl your website. The Webmaster Tools also help you to see where on the Web your site traffic originates from – an invaluable tool for improving and marketing your site.

The Diagnostics Tool
“Your site is not going to be relevant for that search term if you don’t have that content,” says Rob Docherty, an SEO consultant based in Louisville, Kentucky. “Google will tell you to fix the problem, then they’ll come back and index that page,” he says of the tool’s diagnostics tab.

Sometimes during the creation of websites, developers block search engines from accessing content and forget to undo the action. The Webmaster Tools’ diagnostics feature will notify you if you’ve accidentally blocked out Google and other search engines from crawling your site.

You can also use the diagnostics tool to spruce up your search listings with better titles and meta descriptions for your pages. One way the tool does this is by providing a list of all of your website’s pages with the same tags, enabling you to click on the duplicate tags so that you can modify them accordingly.

The Statistics Tool
Using the statistics tab under the Webmaster Tools, you can find out how Google users are getting to your site. It allows you to track incoming traffic, and view the top Google search queries that your site appears in.

The statistics function is extremely helpful when paired with other services, such as Google Analytics, since it enables you to view which “off-site” links are providing you with the most traffic.

How to Use Google to Improve Your SEO: Generating Search Terms through the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Google Trends

While it seems that Google has been steadily pumping out different applications for generating search terms, there are two core services that will help you identify the best keywords and topics to integrate throughout your site:

Google Adwords Keyword Tool: This tool offers keyword suggestions based on the terms you enter or based on your site’s content. It provides statistics on the number of people who search for that search term monthly, as well as how many advertisers compete for the term. It also gives you the option of three different result views:

1. Broad match: This view will give you all of the search phrases that include the particular keyword. For example, a broad match result for “auto transport” might include “car shipping” or “auto transport pricing.”

2. Phrase match: The phrase match view will provide results with the keywords in the same order you entered them. In this case, the query for “smartphone apps” might generate search terms such as “smartphone apps for iPhone” or “smartphone apps for business.”

3. Exact match: Unlike the other options, exact match will show you data on the exact search term, without variation.

One of the biggest advantages of the Adwords Keyword Tool, says Docherty, is that it lets you view and exploit the competition for certain topics, especially if your site is content-driven. “The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is something I use on almost a daily basis,” he says, “especially for gleaning ideas for articles to blog about on my site.”

Google Trends: Google Trends is a tool that allows you to see how often terms are searched for over a period of time. By providing a view of search terms on a line graph, the tool can help you to predict traffic volume for certain keywords, recognize certain seasons where terms are most popular, and locate the country where your primary search terms appear most.

“It’s a good way to learn what people are and will be talking and searching about,” says Docherty. “Even when I’m looking for domains, it gives me a bird’s-eye-view for finding something good to build a site around.”

How to Use Google to Improve Your SEO: Measuring Traffic and Conversion with Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a valuable tool for understanding how people use your website. One of its many uses is the bounce rate, for example, which informs you of how many visitors click away from your site before navigating to the other pages. “This is a very important number because it tells you how effective your landing pages are at pulling visitors deeper into the site,” says Dawkins of Trace Media.

With this type of information, you can change or include certain keywords throughout your site content to make sure visitors that land there, stay there, because they’ve found what they’re looking for.

This leads to another important feature of Google Analytics: the ability to pair your findings with other Google tools. Once you’ve gathered the necessary information from Google Analytics, you can use the data in conjunction with Google’s Website Optimizer, for example, which enables split testing of modified pages. After you’ve made improvements to a page, you can set the Website Optimizer so that a certain amount of viewers see the old version of the page, and use Google Analytics to compare and analyze the results.

Using this combination of Google’s offering of free tools, you can tackle myths about the difficulty of SEO and handle a considerable portion of its implementation on your own. But throughout your process, Docherty says, always keep in mind that content is, indeed, king. “If you see that people are searching for a certain term that isn’t extensively covered on your website, maybe it’s worthwhile to churn out a couple more pages on that topic,” he says. “It really comes down to thinking about content.”

Old SEO Tatics No Longer Work

July 19th, 2010

This is not an article to tell you not to bother with some of the following techniques, as I’m sure different SEO’s will have seen different successes come from many different areas. But through my carrier I have optimized many sites, and through research and development there are some which don’t have the same influence as they did 18, 12 and even 6 months ago – and I’d suggest that you spend less time on these things. With the ever changing faces of Google, i.e. caffeine, mayday and brands update it seems that the algorithm has simplified, concentrating more on key areas and less on peripherals. Here are some ideas that I’d suggest to any site owners. W3c Validation – Although a valid web page is always going to work and display more efficiently I have not seen any evidence to suggest it has any impact on overall rankings. Therefore don’t spend a fortune in time or money trying to eradicate every last error that has probably been in your markup since inception. Description and Keywords Meta Tags – Google have stated (in not so many words) that these are no longer used to factor a websites rankings, I’d always suggest using keywords within the description as a click through exercise as much as anything else. For my line of work, keywords such as “auto transport” and “car shipping” are important to getting my page recognized. Rather than stuffing my page full of these keywords – or any keywords for that matter – I pay close attention to the density of each keyword and try not to overdo it. Creating the perfect page is like creating the perfect recipe, too much of any ingredient can make the whole page bad. Keyword Stuffing – Although content is still vitally important, gone are the days of pushing to get a keyword in every sentence, Google’s semantic indexing appears to be more accurate than ever so user friendly content is much more acceptable. PageRank Sculpting – Through the Nofollow attribute webmasters were attempting to push PageRank to important pages, to dispel this technique Google changed the way nofollow works. Now a nofollowed link will be seen as a non-existent link and therefore sculpting is no longer possible. Reciprocal Linking – Another one that Google has publically come out and stated their disdain for! It comes back to the old argument of usability and serving the site visitors, personally I have seen success from reciprocal linking but there were other factors that could have influenced the power of these links. General rule, don’t bother. Paid Links – God knows how Google goes about finding these, but they do. My advice is to only pay for a link if it is from a themed site to yours, were your link will actually be of use to someone reading that site. I hope these have been useful, as I say at the top this is just a guide from what I have personally seen. Next time I will be discussing the core factors that influence great rankings.

Internet Advertising And Its Importance In The Online Environment

July 3rd, 2010

When it comes to identifying the factors that help a business in being successful on-line, nothing is a lot more vital than publicidad en internet (Internet advertising). Several may dispute that website design represents the top factor of an on-line business as its attractiveness and functionality aids a business make sales, catch consumer attention, and encourages repeat business.

While its true that this is a vital factor for an online business, the reality is that it doesn’t matter how great your website is when clients are not able to locate it without the necessary help of publicidad en internet (Internet advertising). When a business invests in internet advertising it could often benefit from many advantages including brand recognition, target marketing, and increased customer traffic.

Internet advertising plays a large part in a company, having the capability to develop brand recognition. The online surrounding is flooded with many companies and brands, creating a trend that several consumers would purchase an item not based only on price, but on a brand they know. Brand recognition incorporates both the recognition of the good and the recognition of the company in which they are purchasing it from.

With an efficient internet advertising campaign a company can take the steps to start brand recognition long before an individual is attracted in making an on-line purchase. With web site appropriate internet advertising and e-mail campaigns a company can build a understanding with their prospective customer so that when they’re set to purchase they could be relaxed buying from your business.

Even though to fully understand how brand recognition is accomplished by internet advertising you have to understand the internet advertising trait of target marketing. One of the greatest disadvantages of conventional marketing in the physical environment is that it proves to be more and more tough to speak directly to your clientele.

The marketing options of radio, television and print media commonly support wide spectrum marketing, marketing to the masses so as to reach a select few. With the target marketing created in internet advertising you would be able to advertise on web-sites which are related to your particular clientele and advertise on web-sites that are related to your business. This exposure would aid customers to recognize your advertisements and become familiar with your company, developing brand recognition through target marketing.

Without the use of internet advertising, success would be hard to find and your businesses potential would never be met.

Google And Semantic Proximity – We Clarify How Google Calculates Keyword Proximity In Ordered Xhtml Structures.

July 2nd, 2010

Google is consistently looking at ways of improving the quality of the results it delivers, and ensuring that returned pages are of high relevance to the users query is clearly one of the most efficient ways in which this aim can be acheived. Most people are avawre of keyword proximity and density, the way that search engines look at the density and positioning of a given keyword or search phrase throughout a pages content in order to determine what queries that page would be relevant to, but in this article we are going to to take a look at how Google views lists and ordered text, and in particular, how semantic proximity is calculated for keywords used throughout the list.

In orthodox text format the semantic closeness of a given keyword can be calculated by counting the words in between each usage, however the fact that certain html formatting such as lists are read in a slightly different manner, means that this method is somewhat inaccurate.

How Is Keyword Semantic Closeness In Lists And Structured Text Calculated? Imagine the below is an unordered list on an otherwise blank webpage, With SEO Services as the pages header, if you applied the normal methodology of calculating semantic closeness to the below list you would be lead to assume that Google would see the page as being more relevant to a query for “Cheap SEO Services” than for a query based on the search phrase “affordable SEO Services”, however, you would be mistaken. Because the phrase SEO Services appears in the pages header tag and the keywords “cheap” “affordable” “effective” and “pay on results” are contained within the structure of an unordered list, Google will actually attribute identical semantic closeness to all of the keywords in the list to those in the pages header tag.

SEO Services
Cheap
Affordable
Effective
Pay On Results

This revelation has apparent benefits to offer those who know about it, often when optimising a page for several related keywords (think of sites targetting several local towns and villages, but offering the same services to each) the use of a structured list or a simular mode of creating structured text would present a great opportunity for gaining good density and semantic closeness of important keywords without the need for unnecessary repetitions, this means that the optimised page will have a more organic appearance with the end result of improving the quality of content whilst still maintaining a high level of search engine optimisation.

The ability of Google to correctly attribute indentical semantic closeness to keywords included in the above list relies upon the search engine analysing html structures such as header tags, titles, bold and strong text, aswell as larger sized text which could be considered as emphasized, with nested tables, line breaks and divs all being recognised as a way of creating lists, or more correctly, ordered structures of text.

SEO Consultants : The Basics Explained

July 2nd, 2010

Search engine’s ranking strategies were, at one time, quite simple and relatively unchanging. Today, ranking strategies change all the time so that you need to keep a constant eye on, and change your SEO plan continuously to keep your site at the top of the search engine list.

It is not uncommon for site owners to watch their rankings fall without appreciating why that is. As their pages start to slide down the listings, their traffic volume starts to fall too. As their traffic dries up so do their sales. An SEO consulting expert is what is needed if this happens. They will pay close attention to the algorithms and adapt quickly to the changes that they see. While your competitors wonder what is happening and struggle to maintain their positions, you can be sitting pretty for the keywords that you are targeting.

Put simply, if you have a website that is not ranking well in the search engines then you are wasting the investment that you have made in it. Without targeted traffic coming to it, it can not contribute to your bottom line, which is the whole point of it created in the first place. Therefore, it makes sense, both logical and financial, to hire a freelance SEO consultant. Whether you want to collect visitor details for an email campaign or you want to drive visitors into a sales funnel, in the long run an SEO consultant will more than pay for themselves with the improvement in results that they will bring you.

Freelance SEO consultants can provide analysis of your site, keyword research, link formation, writing services, management of online reputation and social media optimization. Some SEO consultants can set up and manage pay-per-click campaigns. When you sit down with your freelance SEO consultant you will decide together which of these services will optimize the placement of your website.

Any professional SEO consultant that you hire should have several years of experience in the search industry. As well as experience, tactical and strategic foresight are attributes that you should look for. They should not only be able to monitor the current state of the search engines’ algorithms, but also be able to predict what the near future holds. The ability to accurately track results and report are also important, as is the range of tools that they have at their disposal.

Does your company need to hire a professional or not? What is your internet niche? Is it a niche that experiences very little competition? If so, you are in a good place and perhaps do not need the services of an SEO consultant. On the other hand, if you are constantly fighting for good keywords and to keep in the top search engine rankings, a professional SEO consultant may be just what you need.

On-Page Search Engine Optimisation For Newbies – We Outline The Straightforward Do’s And Dont’s Of Search Engine Optimisation.

June 26th, 2010

The internet grows each and every day at an alarming rate, every month around 200,000 brand new domains are registered as more and more people realise that they need to act now to gain an online presence for their business. Many of these domains are registered by those who are new to search engine optimisation and have no idea of what is required in order to make sure their website is well optimised and how to promote it so that it ranks well for important keywords in search engine like Google. The below list is an introduction to on page SEO and should give any first time webmasters a good push in the correct direction. Ofcourse if you do not have the time or expertise to implement the below advise you could always find a professional provider of SEO Services to optimise the site on your behalf.

Meta tags.
Although the keyword meta tag is no longer used by Google, it is still a good plan to make sure that you include your important keywords in this tag. The title tag is very important as it tells search engines what your page is about, it should also enclose your important keywords and be under 60 charectors long. The meta description tag is normally the paragraph that Google will display below your listing in the search results it should be attractive to the human eye, descriptive and informative and should also contain your important keywords. The meta description tag should be 170 chars or less in length.

Navigation.
Make sure your websites navigation is as intuative and easy to use as possible, include keywords where possible without defering from the usability of the site, and if your navigation is flash based, make sure you support this with text links as search engines cannot yet read flash fully.

Header Tags.
Header tags should contain your important keywords, search engines attribute unique weights to the different header tags, h1 being seen as the most important, then h2, and so on.

Keyword Density
In order to make certain that your website is indexed for the keywords you chose, it is essential to make sure that the page in question contains a decent density of the key phrase, three to five percent is usually ideal, always remember to write for the human reader, and not for the search engines, if you find yourself having to try too hard to get the correct density of keyword within the text, then perhaps you have chosen too many keyword for a single page. As a provider of SEO Services, I generally advise my clients to use one keyword per page, although if the keywords are very simular, you can sometimes easily optimise a page for far more, it really depends on the subject and flow of the pages content.

Avoiding Canonicalization.
Make sure that you redirect the non www. version of your domain to www. to prevent canonicalization (duplicate content). This can be done by creating a 301 redirect in your htaccess file if your website is hosted on an apache server (ask your webhost for help if you are stuck with this) Once the redirection is in effect check it is working properly by testing each page, to do this go to the page in your browser and remove the www. from the beginning of the url then hit enter, the address in the url bar should redirect back to the www. version.

Search Engine Marketing For Beginners – A Newbie Approach To Search Engine Optimization

June 26th, 2010

Search engine marketing is a broad and very complicated field. Even the most experienced online marketers can be overwhelmed when optimizing their websites for the search engines. Fortunately, you can learn proper search marketing by taking it one step at a time.

You have to understand that search engine optimization is a long process. It requires hard work, research, and patience. But you will be able to enjoy long term profitable results as long as you implement the correct SEO techniques.

So here is a simple search engine marketing for beginners guide. If you are planning to build a business website, the following tips could help you get started with SEO.

Start with a Good URL

Many online business owners neglect the importance of URL. In simple terms, the URL is the address of your website. It could be used as a branding tool to carve your niche in the online market. It is also a critical element to make your website search engine friendly.

Your site’s URL should reflect the main keywords of your business. So if you are targeting the weight loss market, it is ideal to craft a URL that contains the word weight loss. As much as possible, you have to choose a keyword-rich URL so that search engines could index your site faster.

Research the Right Keywords

Before you put content to your website, you have to research the right keywords first. There are free keyword research tools available for website owners. Choose keywords that are not too competitive. As a rule of thumb, you should choose a keyword that generates 25,000 to 50,000 search volume each month.

Once you select the right sets of keywords, you have to use them properly. First, use a keyword for the Meta title of your website. Your page headlines should also have keywords. If you have graphics and pictures on your web pages, then include ALT texts with keywords.

The articles on your site should also contain the right keywords. Place your primary keywords on the title of each article. Then sprinkle a few keywords on the main content. Do not overstuff your articles with keywords. Major search engines could ban your site from their indices if you will spam the keywords.

Create a Flawless Website Design

Web design is important for search engine optimization. But this does not mean that you should have a glitzy and high impact website. As long as the right SEO elements are present, a simple website could outperform a highly sophisticated non-optimized website.

The first thing you must do is to ensure that no broken links are present on your website. All internal links that point to your sub-pages should work properly. You must also link your sub-pages to the home page. Most important of all, create a site map for your website so that the search engines can index all the pages.

It is true that search engine marketing/optimization is complicated. However, learning the basics is not difficult. If you start with the correct SEO approach, then there are good chances that your website will perform excellently on the search results.

SEO Specialist – White Hat Vs Black Hat

June 25th, 2010

There are many things that you need to consider when choosing a seo specialist. Typically, business owners will pay a monthly fee for SEO work. You need to choose a SEO specialist For a lot of business owners it can be a huge decision for their business, but in this article I want to discuss some important factors when working with an SEO expert.

There are correct ways to do SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and incorrect ways to do SEO. For example, most SEO guru’s will use white hat, which is simply the safe way to bring your rankings up in the search engines. However, some shady SEO freelancers, or even companies use black hat techniques which can get your website de-indexed from the search engines.

What Is White Hat SEO?

White hat can be anything from optimizing your website to meet Google standards without violating any of there TOS (Terms of Service). This can include optimizing your page so that it shows up in Google for various keywords. In fact, for anything to rank in Google you will need to have your keywords in your title tags, description, H1 tags, ect.

A seo specialist will be able to do this for you correctly. Also, many techniques of white hat SEO include writing articles, press releases, blog commenting, directory submissions, ect. Everything a white hat specialist does will not be in non-spammy method, and your website will be rewarded in the search engine for this.

What Is Black Hat SEO?

So this brings me to a improper way to do SEO. Black hat SEO is basically a shortcut to getting ranked in the search engines. True these black hat methods might get your site ranked higher and quicker, but the cons outweigh the pros by a long shot. For instance, if you have chosen a black hat methods for SEO your site can get banned from Google all together.

Black hat can also be spamming blogs, keyword stuffing, hiding text, ect. If Google catches on to this you will be penalized heavily. Personally, I have never gotten a website banned, but from what I hear it is nearly impossible to get reinstated once the big G decides to ban your site from their index.

Trust Your SEO Guru

Trust builds a good business and you simply need to communicate with the person you hire to do your SEO work. You will need to be able to communicate with them on a weekly basis to make sure they are doing the job correctly. However, SEO does not happen overnight, usually 4-8 weeks before you see any noticeable results.

Please keep in mind that SEO takes time. However, your website does have to be optimized correctly if you do want to see good rankings in the search engines.
